THE GREAT RIFT VALLEY

Manyara Park marks the entrance to the Great Rift Valley? a cliff more than 600 metres high.

The valley was given its name in 1894 by the explorer John Walter Gregory. It refers to the complex of faults and volcanoes stretching 6,000 km from Syria to Mozambique. The complex system has several branches. The eastern branch crosses Kenya and Tanzania to the east of Lake Victoria.

The Great Rift Valley is the source of many theories about the origin of mankind. The fault is ideal for preserving fossils, and its tectonic activity has brought them to the surface. Numerous hominid fossils have been found here.

Some of the oldest agrarian and pastoral cultures in Africa developed in this region.

Guide's tip

“The lions in the trees are very difficult to see. But even if you don't see them, you'll love this park for its high concentration of monkeys. Baboons are everywhere! Lake Manyara also attracts a lot of birds, over 400 species. I particularly like watching the pink flamingos.
I'd recommend this park as a day trip at the start of your trip.“
