Visit Arusha
nested between lakes, craters and mountains
Arusha has one of the smallest national parks in Tanzania. It is located 25 km north-west from the city of Arusha and can be accessed via 2 entrances: Ngurdoto Gate and Momella Gate.
Arusha National Park comprises 3 well-defined zones: The 7 Momella lakes, the Ngurdoto crater and Mount Meru, Africa's 4th highest peak at 4,566 metres.
It is possible to climb Mount Meru. Birdwatchers are particularly fond of this park.

Habitat & Animals
Arusha National Park has an extremely varied vegetation, ranging from the lush tropical forests at the foot of Mount Meru to the vast grassy plains dotted with acacia trees. The swamps and wetlands around the Momella lakes contrast with the arid landscapes high above the Ngurdoto crater. This diversity of biomes creates a rich and complex environment, offering varied habitats for a wide variety of animal species, while being less densely populated than other parks in Tanzania.
Look out for:

GUEREZA COLOBUS
Arusha National Park is home to the Guereza Colobus, easily recognised by the long white hairs on either side of its body.
They live in small groups of up to 15 individuals. The group is made up of a dominant male, females and their young. This species lives in forests, usually near rivers or lakes. Each group defends its domain from other groups. Guéréza colobus monkeys can grow up to 70 centimetres long, with the largest males weighing up to 14 kg. Colobus monkeys have no thumbs, an adaptation of their arboreal lifestyle.
Their main predators are chimpanzees and leopards.

Guide's tip
“I love this little park, I think its a great way to start a trip and get you in the mood for safaris.
It's often forgotten about but the view from Ngurdoto crater is very pretty, and if you're lucky, on a clear day you can see Mount Kilimanjaro!“
