WHALE SHARK
The whale shark can reach up to 20 meters in length and weigh as much as 34 tons. It is estimated to live up to 100 years. Moving relatively slowly, between 2 and 5 km/h, it covers vast distances. Its migration is linked to temperature changes and the concentration of plankton, which it primarily feeds on, much like a whale. It also consumes krill, algae, small crustaceans, and small fish. It filters the surface waters with its wide mouth.
It is found in tropical and warm oceans.
Its primary defense mechanism is its skin, which can be up to 15 cm thick. Its only predators are orcas, certain sharks, and humans. The whale shark’s population is difficult to estimate, but the species is considered endangered, particularly due to overfishing and its slow reproduction rate. Its fins are highly sought after in Asia.
This massive, gentle fish is not aggressive and poses no danger to humans. Their tendency to swim near the surface makes it very easy to swim alongside them without diving equipment.
