Zanzibar certainly evokes in all minds a legendary spice counter of yesteryear. Arab merchants, and in particular the Sultan of Oman quickly saw the potential of its fertile land and its advantageous geographical location. Ivory and slaves from the African continent also made the wealth of this counter.
Nowadays, Zanzibar is better known for its white sand beaches, its dolphins, its comfortable hotels. Tourism has developed a lot especially in the last 15 years, but Zanzibar and especially its inhabitants still live at a pace and in a culture completely different from the rest of the world.
