THE HIPPOPOTAMUS
It's impossible to talk about Ruaha National Park without mentioning the hippopotamus. You can see them out of the water and hear them frequently. Amphibious, the dominant males guard a territory of around 500 metres. They spend the day in the water to avoid dehydration and come out at night to feed, consuming around 40 kg of grass.
Hippos follow a precise path when they go out, digging clearly visible trails. Males fight violently, using their canines in confrontations. Females are devoted mothers, carrying their young for 8 months and nursing them for a year. The young can swim before they can walk and can multiply their weight by 10 in the first year.

Expert's tip
“Ruaha is one of my favourite parks. It's a bit Serengeti / a bit Tarangire. You really feel alone in the world in this park, in the middle of the baobab-studded bush. At the end of the day, sit by the river for a magical moment when the colours and light change completely. Everything becomes magical. It's a unique moment to observe the fishing birds, to admire the finesse and refinement of the weaver nests hanging here and there in the acacias, to smell the incomparable scent of the humidity that is beginning to invade the bush. You feel Ruaha more than you discover it, and it leaves an indelible mark.“
