CLOVES
Pemba Island is more fertile than Unguja, with agriculture playing a significant role, particularly the cultivation of cloves. This crop accounts for around 3 million clove trees on the island, which can grow up to 20 meters tall.
Workers climb the trees to manually harvest the clove buds before they bloom. Once picked, the buds are dried in the sun and turn a dark brown color.
Pemba is the third-largest clove producer in the world, contributing nearly 10% of global production, behind Madagascar (15%) and far behind Indonesia, the largest producer (70%).
Cloves have long been recognized for their antiseptic and anesthetic properties.
This spice is also widely used in cooking in many countries in various ways. The majority of the global production is used to make kreteks, Indonesian clove cigarettes.

Expert's tip
“If you want to escape the crowds of Zanzibar's main island, Pemba is the perfect place. A truly relaxing and beautiful destination.
The island’s resorts may not always meet the standard expectations for this type of accommodation. But the real luxury here lies in being far from everything, in a breathtaking setting.
It’s a true favorite!”
